When I first tried HelloFresh, I was wary and skeptical. The entire idea of cooking my own meals and not ordering pizza every night was a scary one. Through the entire process I was asking myself: Is HelloFresh worth it?
Now, about a year later, I couldn’t live without it.
Whether you’ve just moved out on your own (which was Ella and me last year) or you’re a busy parent, meal planning is hard work. It’s time consuming to plan a diverse menu for your week that includes the nutrition you need, the stuff you like, and the skill to make it, especially if you’re new to all things “meal” and “planning”. By the time I’d stocked up on everything and watched a million Jamie Oliver videos, I was so tired and overwhelmed that it’s tempting to give up and just order in.
It’s not that I couldn’t cook, but I’d never considered myself talented in that department. The truth is, I just didn’t have enough exposure to cooking (or eating) things outside my comfort zone.
How does HelloFresh work?
It really is a simple process. First, you choose you plan, something that fits your family and lifestyle, how many meals you need a week and how many people you’re feeding. Then, you just sit back and wait for the goods to arrive.
The HelloFresh team deliver a wonderful menu every week, and then pack fresh, locally sourced ingredients into your box with the recipes. The portions are already measured out to ensure there’s no food waste.
When the box arrives, you just need to follow the (super easy) recipes, snap a pic for Instagram, and eat your delicious, home cooked meal.
Remember how I said I wasn’t very good at cooking? Now I can make that, no fuss. If I say a recipe is easy, it means it’s passed The Jess Test. They’re quick, easy, and so, so delicious.
Is HelloFresh worth the money?
Yeah, it is. And even better, if you use the HelloFresh code “ellagib” at the checkout you’ll get $50 off your first week.
In our household of two people, we spend about $65 a week on three meals through HelloFresh. At face value that’s $21 a meal, $10.5 per person. These meals may be pre-portioned, but I am not a huge eater, so utilising the beauty of leftovers I’ve been carrying those meals over to lunch or dinner the next day.
That gives me lunch and dinner for three days of the workweek, the other two are easy to cover using the few basic recipes I’ve already perfected. Weekend mealtimes are ruled by my social life, so all up we’re spending about $150 a week on food, as a household.
The beauty of HelloFresh is that my grocery list has shrunk dramatically, because I’m only topping up on essentials (bread, milk, eggs,) and the things I need that week (more vegemite, icecream, oil).
Is HelloFresh good for weight loss?
Weight loss is not my goal, but the convenience of the meals being portioned for you and healthy from the start has some great benefits. HelloFresh provides healthy, well balanced meals, which takes away the stress of focusing on your diet. As long as you’re not binge-eating on unhealthy food in between your meals, and you exercise a healthy amount, HelloFresh does help weight loss.
Does HelloFresh have vegetarian options?
Yes, it does! You can choose from three plans, Classic, Vegetarian or Family. They even have two special add-on boxes, the Fruit Box and the Juice Box, with seasonal fruits and veg for juicing and munching on.
HelloFresh has made becoming a vegetarian really easy. I got to the point where I just couldn’t think of another meat-less meal, but they’ve done all the thinking, planning, and taste-testing for me.
For me, HelloFresh has made living out of home so much easier, and I couldn’t live without it. Well I’d live, eating a lot more pizza and a lot less Spanish Style Tofu and Veggie Bowl.
